At Domasi Prison in Malawi, one chaplain’s encounter with The Basic Series turned simple booklets into a powerful journey of faith. Chaplain Nellie K. Mwafulirwa was so inspired that she expressed her reflections through a beautiful poem, Nine Steps of Light. Each stanza captures how discipleship is more than studying—it’s a Holy race, a journey of the heart guided by Christ.
Nine Steps of Light
By Nellie K., Domasi Prison Chaplain
(Inspired by ServeNow’s Basic Series books)
In pages small, yet truth so wide.
The journey starts with Christ as a guide.
To know His life, His love, His Grace
Is to begin the Holy race…The Bible’s voice, both old and new,
Speaks wisdom deep and ever true.
To read, to study, not just glance,
We find in it our souls advance….Salvation Gift, not earned but given,
A doorway to the life forgiven.
Through Prayer we speak, through Silence we hear
God’s presence drawing ever near…Who is God? The great I am,
The Shepherd, Father, sacrificial Lamb.
His Spirit moves, unseen yet real,
A Comforter, a flame, a seal…The church, a body, not just walls,
Where grace uplifts and mercy calls.
To be a Christian bold and true,
Is daily walking in what’s new.So, booklet by booklet, truth unfolds.
Not just ink, but hearts it molds.
Nine Steps of Light, a sacred start
To shape the soul and stir the heart….
Through these booklets, Nellie’s heart was shaped and her faith deepened. She reflects on God’s love, the wisdom of the Bible, and the power of salvation—showing that discipleship is more than learning—it’s a Holy race, a journey of transformation, one page at a time.
